Some small things to look for in these executions: I'm playing with a looser colour style - not always following that "stick to colouring within the lines" idea. I caught myself saying that to Ben the other night and thought to myself, why? Why stick to staying within the lines. So I tried it myself, and I kinda like it.
I'm also playing with removing the background colour splotch (technical term) when it overlaps with the characters looser colouring.
These are NOT final drawings! I'm still playing around to get it right.
Without the white removed...
With the white removed....
Another example of the colouring not staying within the lines - I like the playfulness of it!
And finally, a double spread to see just what this kind of treatment could like. Have also tried a new font (needs to be bigger...). Thoughts?
One thing I LOVE about these is that Charlotte has 2 different socks! Maybe because that's totally what my girls do, but it gives that little 'spunky' character to her. Love it. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteI also really like the rubbing hair image & the smiles they both have (mom could even have a bit more hair than that if you wanted - it comes back fairly quickly - like in the game-playing one). Although I'll admit that there's something about mom's lips in this one that feels more 'cartoon-y'...not sure about the pink lips - but I do like how her breasts are illustrated in this one - kinda there yet not there...
I think I prefer the stronger, brighter colours of the radiation table/fridge illustrations. I guess it has to be mixed up a bit? Not sure how that works - do all of the pics have a background from a similar colour family (so-to-speak) or do you just mix it up, or do you stick with the same few all the time???
I'm also afraid I'm not sure if I can really comment on the colours to the lines or not - I don't know if I can get a feel for how it would look with a book full of images like this... My gut feel is that I think I like the colour to the edges - like the hair rubbing one and the "Things are changing in our house" image. Is that me not being very playful!?!? :) I just find those images so comforting...
I just looked closer again & realized that the colour goes 'outside' of the lines in the hair rubbing one too - maybe it's the white that throws me in the other ones?? And yet, when I looked at the image of Charlotte with her rabbit, I do like the clean lines of that one.
I actually really like that font - maybe a little bigger? How big is the font in most books? For some reason I find that font 'comforting' too - how that can be, I have no idea, and yet...
I'm also really liking the loose edges around the images. It almost feels like a little view into Charlotte's world - which is what the whole book is essentially like. Feels gentle and soft.
It's really getting closer and closer!! Yay!
